Come join us to be soldiers of Mary in a spiritual battle for Christ.
The Legion of Mary was founded by Frank Duff on the 7th of September 1921 at Myra House, Francis Street, Dublin. This association of the Catholic Church is one of the largest apostolic participations of the laity. The purpose and driving force is to give glory to God through the sanctification of its members and the faithful. The Apostolate consists of co-operating with the Holy Spirit through a balance of prayers and service. The Legion of Mary is striving in many parts of India and the world with millions of members.
History of the Legion of Mary in Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi:
The Legion of Mary was started in 1958, August 15th under the patronage of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour (Nityadar Mai). Rev. Fr Gaulbert Noronha, the Parish priest, was the first spiritual director. Mr. Joseph Mary D’silva was elected as the first president of the unit, which was called praesidium. At that time, many active members joined and undertook spiritual works of mercy, visiting families in their homes and those sick in hospitals. The members also tried to connect the underprivileged to other organizations that could support them. At present, we meet every Thursday evening at 4:00 pm in the church meeting hall. Regular attendance, recitation of the Rosary, and catena prayers, sharing of the weekly visits to the sick and helpless with each other. Every legionary is required to carry out weekly apostolic work in the spirit of faith and in union with Mary to reach out to the family and bring people back to the church. We also do home visits within the parish by visiting the sick, the cancer patients, the retired priests' home, and celebrate festivals with them. We promote devotion by praying the Rosary in funeral houses and also at the grotto.
The Legion of Mary feast in the parish is celebrated on the 15th of August, on the feast of our Lady of Assumption by offering a thanksgiving mass along with the parishioners. At present, our Spiritual Director is Rev. Fr Charles Menezes, and the president is Mr. Oswald Cornelio.
Let us all welcome Mother Mary into our homes and say... "I belong entirely to you, and all that I have is yours."
